How to Copy and Paste Sections in Shopify (and When You Should Use It)

If you spend a lot of time in Shopify’s theme editor, you’ve probably had this moment: you build a section, get it looking exactly right, and then realize you want that same layout somewhere else. Another page. Another template. Another landing page.

Until fairly recently, your options were limited. You either rebuilt the section from scratch or duplicated an entire template and cleaned it up afterward. Both approaches worked, but neither was particularly efficient.

Shopify solved this with a feature many merchants still don’t realize exists: copy and paste for sections.

In the video above I walk you through how this works in practice.

The Hidden Copy and Paste Feature

Unlike most Shopify features, this one doesn’t live in the theme customizer interface. There’s no button or menu item that calls attention to it.

Instead, it’s accessed through a simple right-click.

Once you’ve added a section to a page and configured it the way you want, you can right-click on that section and select Copy. Then, navigate to another page or template, right-click, and choose Paste.

Shopify will drop that section into the new location with all of its settings intact. Content, styling, spacing, and configuration all come along for the ride.

For teams building or refining multiple pages, this can be a major time saver.

Why This Matters for E-Commerce Teams

Because consistency matters. You want the same layout logic, visual hierarchy, and spacing across multiple pages, whether those pages are product templates, landing pages, or informational content.

Copy and paste helps you:

  • Reuse proven layouts without rebuilding them
  • Maintain visual consistency across the site
  • Speed up page creation for campaigns or launches
  • Reduce small configuration errors that happen during manual rebuilds

This is especially helpful during high-pressure moments like seasonal launches, promotions, or site refreshes, when speed and accuracy both matter.

A Practical Example

Imagine you’ve created a blog post grid section that highlights recent content. You’ve adjusted the spacing, typography, and layout to match your brand perfectly.

Later, you decide that same grid would work well on your Contact page or About page.

With copy and paste, you don’t need to recreate it. You simply copy the section from one page and paste it into another template. Shopify handles the rest.

This works with any section, not just simple ones. The more complex the configuration, the more valuable this feature becomes.

There is an important limitation to be aware of

Copied sections are not global.

When you paste a section into another page, Shopify creates a completely separate instance of that section. The two sections look the same, but they are not linked.

That means:

  • Updating one section does not update the others
  • If you paste the same section into three places and later want to change it, you’ll need to update all three

For small sites or one-off pages, this usually isn’t an issue. But for larger stores or teams that rely heavily on reused layouts, it’s something you need to plan for.

In some cases, a custom global solution or reusable block approach may be more appropriate.

When Copy and Paste Is the Right Tool

This feature shines when:

  • You need to move fast
  • You want consistency without complexity
  • You’re working on a small number of pages
  • You’re prototyping or iterating on layouts

It’s less ideal when:

  • You need centralized control over repeated content
  • Many pages rely on the same section long-term
  • Frequent updates are expected across all instances

Understanding where copy and paste fits into your workflow helps you avoid maintenance headaches later.

How to Use It Strategically

For most teams, the best approach is a mix.

Use copy and paste for:

  • Campaign landing pages
  • One-off layouts
  • Early-stage builds and experimentation

Then, if a section proves valuable across many pages, consider a more structured solution that supports centralized updates.

This keeps your theme flexible without becoming fragile.
